| Friday was sunny and 60 in SLC. Woke up Saturday to clouds, snow, and 30ish.
Race was 6hr to complete as many laps to the summit as possible under 6 hours. Each lap was 3 miles to the top with 3,000 ft gain. Mark your number at the top and turn around and head back down.
My goal was around 5 hours to complete 3 laps... just under the female winners from previous years.
I felt strong the first lap up- ran the entire way up. Headed back down making sure not to push too hard and burn my quads out in the first lap. Quads were great, toes were on fire!! First time racing in my NB Venzee trail shoes. I had worn them for a bunch of 16 mile training runs with lots of hills and never had any problems. I put nanospikes on my shoes about half a mile from the summit due to icy snow-packed consitions.
First lap took 1:24 (top and back). Felt good the second lap up. Hiked the last 0.4 miles to the summit. Toes were on fire again all the way down. I couldn't stride out on the way down. 2nd lap was about 1:28 (top and back).
Third lap was still strong but stomach was quesy- thought for sure I was going to puke after the race. Started back up for the third lap at 3:55 and started thinking that I might be able to go for a fourth lap, which I was not planning on. No women have managed 4 laps under 6 hours. Partial laps don't count and if time goes over 6 hours and you're not done, lap doesn't count.
On the way down I made a cut-off time. If I made it to the bottom by 4:25 I would head back for a 4th lap, if not I would end. My toes were throbbing the entire way down again and I couldn't really coast down. Made it to the bottom at 4:30. Went back and forth on attempting a 4th lap, but just not sure I could have made it up and back in 1:30. 3rd lap was 1:35.
If my toes had been ok I think I would have been able to do 4 laps. It would have made the 2nd and 3rd laps faster and I would have been able to really pound down on the 4th lap.
The trail was a pretty technical single track with lots of loose rock, and big rocks, and people all over the place, and snow on the last mile and muddy/wet conditions on the rest of the trail.
Overall a pretty fun race (minus the fact that my toenails are going to come off and still hurt to the touch!). Quads are screaming, but I felt strong the entire race and ended up not puking!!!

| Marathon day.
Felt ready to race! Started out right on target, felt relaxed and strong. Calves started to feel tight about mile 3ish- no pain in my shin/soleus. Not a good sign, but just stayed relaxed and kept going. Calves kept tightnening up. Bathroom stop at mile 13.
Came out of the bathroom and everything blew up. My quad tightened up, but was able to stop and stretch it out. Calves were locked up. I thought about turing around and dropping out b/c I didn't think I could run for 13 more miles, but since the course was closed and I didn't think I would be getting out for another 5 hours, I kept going.
My calves were locked up the entire race.... I took 5 bathroom stops and threwup 3 times.
I have never had such a terrible race....EVER!!!
Not sure why my calves locked up like that or my stomach was such a mess, but thinking the stomach flu my girls had the week before may have compromised my immune system (plus all the stress I have been dealing with between work, coaching, and volunteering at school).
Oh well. I ended up 9th female and 2nd age group. I think I would have smoked that course. The last 8 miles down the canyon are a nice mello downhill that would have been awesome to fly down. Have to redeem myself next year....

Ran the 5-mile race as a tempo. Thought my legs would be prety tired after 10 the day before and cleaning and mowing...

| Decided to do a tri. Haven't raced one in 3 years, haven't ridden my bike in months, and haven't swam in a year or two...
Decided to do the sprint distance. Swim was 1 mile- came out 20 seconds behind the first girl. OK transition. Horribly slow bike, OK transition, great run.
I am so terrible at biking... off the bike in 4th place. Easily picked off the girl in front of me, but couldn't catch the other two. Sprint is not enough run time for me. Didn't realize I was only 30 seconds behind 2nd place or I would have picked it up...

Felt super the whole way- ran a 6:40 pace on the flats.
Was going to drop down to 6:20 for the last mile and a fueled a litte odd this race and it caught up with me and I ended up with a massize side ache the last mile so suffered in at 7:15 pace. sides were sore for a couple days after.
Very happy with this race-everything felt strong and relaxed...

| Sinus were extra plugged up the night before, but I figured I would be ok for the race.... HAHAHA!!!
Learned the hard way that it is very hard to push through a 50k with a headcold....
Felt strong for the first 10-12 miles running 1st-3rd place with a couple girls. We hit the flats and I was excited to run hard, but my body had different plans....
The wheel came off hard and it sucked..... dizzy, nausua, sideaches, low energy, upset stomach... my legs felt great but my system was screaming at me!!!!
I sucked it up for the last 18 miles and finished. Was past by 3-4 girls with 1 mile left....which is the worst...
Awesome course- few rough spots, but would be pretty fast under favorable health conditions :)

| Missed my 5k race b/c kids basketball game was changed last minute.... probably ok b/c my abs are still pretty sore from surgery and my achilles is really flared up. I noticed today that it is about twice the size of my noninjured one. YIKES! Time to cross-train for a bit....
